I like most Canadians over 50 have a fascination with railways and steam engines in particular. I decided to put together this page showing some of the Cabooses that are in use and in private hands today. I would also like to add any that are from our past. |
This site is a collection of pictures railway cabooses from all over. You are invited to submit any picture that you have that could go on this page. Click here to E mail me John MacDonald johnmacdonald@summerville-novascotia.com |
Yes the Caboose has come and gone but just when did the end start.

This picture was submitted by Dave Green. The following is his words on this picture. The picture was taken in 1958 |
Always loved this pic my dad took from Powell St looking down on the Great Northern Dock just east of Ballantyne Pier. That old flat top caboose (76719) was a rare sight even when I was a kid in the 60’s. |
C.N.R. Diesel, [Road Eng. #]8077 [Class MS-10g] is shown with the caboose. |
![]() | “I have restored a 1940’s era CNR caboose. It will be featured in this year’s Doors Open London and will be open to the public on September 29th and September 30th between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm. It is located at 2343 Trafalgar Street London ON (N.W. corner of Crumlin and Trafalgar St.) Please extend a special invite to all the local members of the CN Pensioners Association to drop by for a visit. If anyone is interested in volunteering for any portion of this event as a tour guide I would be most grateful. I also am looking for someone with knowledge of telegraph, Morse Code and railway telecommunications.” Sincerely, Drew Jolliffe (519) 455-2884 |

![]() | Caboose 437083, displayed on its own track on the northeast corner of Stafford Drive and 1st Avenue South in Lethbridge Alberta on March 11th, 2014. It is part of a series of wood cabooses (437039-437084), manufactured in 1943 and still bears its original number. Around November 1987, CP Rail sold, dismantled or approved retirement of 52 cabooses, including 437083. |

![]() | After the Lethbridge yard was relocated to Kipp, approximately 29 kilometres (18 mi) northwest of Lethbridge in 1988, the City decided to create a historical display to mark the Canadian Pacific Railway presence, using the former 1905 Union Station (now a health centre) as a centerpiece. 2-8-0 steam locomotive CPR 3651 was then moved from Galt Gardens across the street, and placed at the west end, while wood caboose 437083 brought the rear at the east end. So as not to obstruct vehicle passage into the health centre parking lot, the locomotive was placed slightly behind the station. Access http://yourrailwaypictures.com/TrainStations /indexCentral.html to find more about the station and http://yourrailwaypictures.com/CPRsteamengines/ to see more of CPR 3651. |

![]() | CPR 4367788 caboose, displayed beside “the Station” restaurant in Kimberley BC where it was used by owner as an office, in the mid-1980s, after the owner bought it from the CPR in 1976. The caboose was built in 1922, one of the last wooden cabooses made. When the station building was demolished to make way for a Shoppers Drug Mart, the caboose was moved to another downtown location, restored by the Kimberley Caboose Restoration Committee and donated to the Kimberley Underground Mining Railway, a seasonal tourist operation in southwestern BC, see the link below. |
Late Lorne Unwin Massey F. Jones collection
![]() | The interior of the caboose now features many of the original furnishings, such as the pot-bellied stove with its guardrail to keep the pots and pans from sliding off, as well as historical photos of Kimberley’s rail history. Most of this information is courtesy of the Sullivan Mine & Railway Historical Society (SM&R), which runs the Kimberley Underground Mining Railway (KUMR), an interpretive small gauge railway, about 2 miles from the former mine, now closed and unsafe to visit. The highlight of the KUMR visit is a tour with stops through a 750 foot tunnel featuring features a life size model of areas that would have been seen in the mine; such as a rock “face”, which is painted, drilled and ready to blast, a refuge station, and equipment such as the slusher sub and the mucking machine. A miner demonstrates the slusher sub, the jackleg drill and the mucking machine during each of the tours. http://www.kimberleysundergroundminingrailway.ca/ |

CNR Caboose #79124 on display at the Duncan Railway Station in Duncan, British Columbia Duncan, BC – Train Cabooses on Waymarking.com The caboose was purchased by the Canadian Northern Railway, which became the Canadian National Railway, and was used across Canada. In 1953 it was brought to Vancouver Island to work freight trains from Victoria to Youbou. It also saw time at the end of log and lumber trains between Youbou and Cowichan Bay. When it was declared surplus in 1982, the City of Duncan bought it and placed it in the park beside the train station. It was used as office space for awhile but in 2008, a full restoration was started. As you can see from the photos, lots of effort was made to show what it would have looked like during its time on Vancouver Island.

June 1975 The Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific Railway (reporting mark DWP) is a subsidiary railroad of Canadian National Railway (CN) operating in northern Minnesota, United States. A CN system-wide rebranding beginning in 1995 has seen the DWP logo and name largely replaced by its parent company. The DWP line is CN’s connection between International Falls and Duluth, Minnesota, where the railroad connects to a short stretch of the former Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway before following the former Wisconsin Central (both now wholly owned by CN) to Chicago, Illinois. |

CP caboose 437377 stood in front of the Royal Canadian Legion Ogden #154, at 2625 78 Avenue S.E. (near Glenmore Trail) in Calgary, from about 1987 to September 2012, heavily fenced, to prevent vandalism. Sometime in early 2012, the building was closed and the caboose was sold to a concern near Mossleigh (about 40 miles south of Calgary) called Aspen Crossing. The facility features a railway theme and has several railcars and cabooses on site, which they use as visitor accommodation. The move took place on September 21st 2012 and part of it is documented in a 3-minute video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOpaYGnXtkU . It shows the caboose also being painted yellow, to be used temporarily as a retail outlet for the campground.

The origin of wood slat caboose 789 cannot be traced but it’s most probably an ex-CN 785000 to 79000 series caboose, as a lot of the CWRL rolling stock was acquired from CN. ![]() | Napierville Junction Railway caboose 39 in Bicentennial paint, photographed around Delson QC, about 25 km (16 miles) south of Montreal in the late 70s. The purpose of the Napierville Junction Railway was to convey freight across the US/Canadian border from Rouses Point NY through Lacolle QC where it was checked by Customs), then on to Delson and eventually Montreal, on a Delaware & Hudson subsidiary. The D&H was bought and merged into the CPR in the early 1990s, thus turning the Rouses Point to Delson line into Canadian Pacific’s Lacolle Sub. The NJR has 2 diesel locomotives and 4 cabooses. View their diesels 4050 and 4051 at: http://yourrailwaypictures.com/OldDiesels/index Other.html It may interest some that Napierville Juntion 38, the number immediately preceding this one, is a standard wood slat caboose, painted plain red http://www.railroad.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=83&t =47019 and located at Camp-of-the-Woods, a Christian retreat in Upstate New York. |
