CNR EMD SD40 #5010 at Concord Ont. July 1970 SD40, class GF-30d, built 1968 retired April 1998
and sold to the New Brunswick Railway.
The EMD SD40 is a 6-axle diesel-electric 3000 hp locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive
Division between January 1966 and August 1972. The SD40 is a high-horsepower, six-motor freight
locomotive. In 1966, EMD updated its locomotive catalog with entirely new models, all powered by the new 645 diesel engine. These included six-axle models SD38, SDP40 and SD45, in addition to the SD40. All shared standardized components, including the frame, cab, generator, trucks, traction motors, and air brakes. The primary difference was the power output: SD38 = 2,000 hp (1,490 kW) from a non-turbocharged V16, SD40 = 3,000 hp (2,240 kW) from a turbocharged V16, and SD45 = 3,600 hp (2,680 kW) from a turbocharged V20.

 CNR EMD SD40-2W #5311 at Concord Ont. July 1997 The EMD SD40-2 is a 3,000-horsepower (2,200 kW) C-C diesel-electric locomotive built by EMD from 1972 to 1989.
The SD40-2 was introduced in January 1972 as part of EMD’s Dash 2 series, competing against the GE U30C and the MLW M630.  The GMD SD40-2(W) is a Canadian-market version of the SD40-2 diesel-electric locomotive, built for the Canadian National Railway by the Diesel Division of General Motors of Canada Ltd. (formerly General Motors Diesel) of London, Ontario; 123 were constructed between May 1975 and December 1980.[2] The major difference between the SD40-2(W) and a regular SD40-2 is the fitment of a wide-nose Canadian comfort cab,
