| This very tall all-metal “man” composed of water tank and various gears has stood still for years, announcing the former Ogden CPR shops (now Alstom) |
CP Freight #400 westbound, in the town of Canmore Alberta.
You can see the three sisters in the back ground.
 | We can clearly see the brake wheel on boxcar CP 450217, photographed from Salter Street Bridge in Winnipeg during the late 1950s, while steam is still in operation. In the far background is the Arlington Street bridge. Coupled to the boxcar is an old passenger coach and a couple of cabooses. It is probably a mixed train which has just left the CPR Main Street station for Gimli or some point nearby off the mainline. Very soon, First Generation diesels will be taking over. Notice the coal in the tender, also the cover with the two handles, lifted for filling from a water tank, so this is the real thing, in service |

 | Up to about the mid-1980s, CP still had quite a sizeable number of cattle pens within its Alyth Yard in Calgary, to transport Western beef to various points; a leftover from the Burns meat packing plant and subsequently Canada Packers. It was then common to carry cattle to the abattoir, in one of the cars show, now probably undergoing scrapping. After each load, Canadian law demanded that they be whitewashed inside and out with lime to prevent infection, hence the lower white portion. Today’s live cattle are transported by road in stainless steel trailers known as cattleliners which can be easily steam-cleaned between uses. http://www.flickriver.com/photos/tags/cattleliner/ In this photo, it would appear by the lumber pile in front that cattle car 276791 and others are being dismantled on-site. |

 | Sterling Fuels Tank Car The L&PS RY was an electric line that carried both freight & passengers between London & Port Stanley Ont. Sterling Fuels was a company located in London Ont. It was located just across the street from the L&PS RY station and sold both coal and fuel oil. When the politicians at city hall shut down the railway the fuel oil cars were abandoned in Port Stanley. |

Royal American Shows was a very big player on the Canadian “A Circuit”, until events took a sad turn due to taxes around 1975.  | A CF-101 Voodoo aircraft is loaded on a Duluth Winnipeg & Pacific bulkhead car at Canadian Forces Base Bagotville QC in August 1981. From there, the consist went to the La Baie terminal of the Roberval Saguenay Railway (reporting mark RSR) about 10 km east of the Base, before being transferred by RSR to the CN at Jonquière QC, to be part of a southbound freight consist to Montréal (or points unknown). The DWP is a US subsidiary of the CN, while RSR is a company railway with what is now Rio Tinto Alcan, while the heavy duty Le Tourneau wheeled crane in the background belonged to the Canadian Forces. A CF Supply Technician supervisor in uniform is closely overseeing the move and subsequent paperwork. The aircraft is about to be positioned flat on the yellow dolly seen on the rail car. I documented the move officially. |

| One of my visitors, Wayne Anderson from Lethbridge Alberta submitted a collection of old rail cars that he found in the Skiff Alberta area. Most of the pictures are of old CPR rolling stock of several decades ago but there are some CNR railcars from the Big Valley and Red deer areas mixed in. Wayne said that the photos at Skiff would have been taken in the summer of 2010, and I’m sure all the rails on that sub have been lifted by now, as even four years ago the steel had been taken up past Foremost. There isn’t much track past Big Valley any more, and what’s left is now a steam excursion railway between there and Stettler. The C.N.R. track in Red Deer is still used, and that yard is known as the C.N.R. flat. |
