Old Canadian Railway Rolling Stock – Passenger Cars
![]() | The ultimate caboose in Canada is a VIA Park car. All VIA dome passenger cars are named after Canadian national park, in addition to a number. http://www.viarail.ca/en/about-via-rail/our-fleet/park-car Only passengers having booked sleepers can ride this rearmost car, which includes several amenities, least of all complimentary food and permission to access the end dome. This photo of the Westbound Canadian was taken near Seebe AB, about 40 miles west of Calgary, in July 1989, before VIA abandoned all passenger through the area in January 1990. |

![]() | Partial view of Kootenay Park, looking rearward, down the track. Passengers enjoy some free amenities, while relaxing in comfort. In former days, this parlour car was the smoking area. Today the entire train, including the Park Car is totally non-smoking. VIA has scheduled strategic stops every 4 hours or so, enabling passengers to detrain and smoke if they wish. |
| This picture was taken and submitted by Massey F. Jones | |
| If they so desire, passengers traveling in sleeper accomodation can proceed inside the rear dome, anytime, day or night. Many take advantage of the amenity after dark, because it is an extremely peaceful place to gather one’s thoughts. This view shows the lit-up stairs leading to the dome. | |

| Our train had 4 dome cars. The midddle dome cars are called Skyline. The lower portion of the car is a snack bar. Users are mostly day coach passengers and access to the dome is unrestricted day or night http://www.viarail.ca/en/about-via-rail/ | |

![]() | Old railcars never die. The railcar car on the left is VIA 2448, photographed on June 19th, 2008 from a street vantage point near Waterfront Station in Vancouver. It is one of five “Northern Spirit” cars used on the VIA Rail “Hudson Bay” train between Winnipeg and Churchill from 2000 to about 2006. Ridership wasn’t as expected and the train didn’t survive the VIA Rail cutbacks. View excellent details about all 5 “Northern Spirit” cars, including the exterior livery for each car, all different. at http://blog.traingeek.ca/2011/10/via-rails-winnipeg-maintenance -centre_23.html The 2448 had a large polar bear graphic applied to the sides. The link mentions that the car was used as sleeping quarters for the West Coast Express crews because their regular rooms in the CPR station were closed for construction and this may be the case here as the car is hooked up electrically to a building. Skytrain cars to the right are 007 still in its early tricolor scheme and 147 in white. View a picture of the car, most probably on the way to Ferromex in Mexico, as FXE 150004 http://www.flickr.com/photos/milwaukeebeernut/7231265164 |

![]() | One of the cars in passenger train consists until the advent of “all-electric” heating was the steam generator, used to provide “on board” comfort during cold nights and all winter. For most of the 20th Century, passenger cars were heated by steam but it became a problem, once diesel units took over and there was no longer a guaranteed supply of steam at the head end from the locomotive. Steam Generator Unit CN 15418 was built by the Canadian Car & Foundry in 1956 and photographed here in Moncton NB, June 1975. It survived into the VIA Rail era with the same number but became painted in the VIA Rail livery of blue with two wide horizontal yellow stripes on each side. . The unit is a bit unusual because it had square windows, whereas most had round porthole windows. Left of the unit is probably a baggage car and ahead of the steam generator is CN 3648, an MLW RS18 locomotive, one of 54, Class MR-18b (3617-3670), used on smaller runs. For longer runs, a cab unit “F-type” locomotive was usually at the head end and it/or a “B” Unit had a built-in steam generator. |

This is one of a series of cars built in 1969 by Canadian Vickers for commuter transport between downtown Montreal and the West Island (Vaudreuil – Dorion). The orange booths are for passenger fare control at the crossing. The operation was run by the CPR from Windsor Station in downtown Montreal. The AMT (English: Metropolitan Transportation Agency) became the umbrella operation commuter transport for 63 communities in the Montreal area in 1996 and withdrew this type of gallery car by end of summer 2010, replacing it with a newer type of bi-level on selected routes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agence_m%C3%A9tropolitaine |

![]() | Here is a photo of “Le Railcar” in Vancouver’s Gastown, taken in June 1988, during its life as a restaurant. The ex-CPR railway car was moved to Squamish BC; restored to its original splendor inside and it is now preserved as an operating showpiece at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park. A word-for-word copy from http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read. php?15,2358842 describes it all. The Alberta was built in 1929 as one of a fleet of ten ‘superintendent’ cars and was used across the country by Canadian Pacific until the late 1960’s before being retired from active service. It became the centrepiece of a small Gastown restaurant in the 1970’s but after going out of business, reverted to CP Rail’s Marathon Realty subsidiary and was eventually donated to the WCRA. It was shipped to our Heritage Park and after a number of years, a generous donor allowed us to completely rebuild the car. The original bedrooms were removed when it became a restaurant, so the configuration is now lounge, dining/board room and galley. The Alberta has been rebuilt to Transport Canada operating standards and will be available for future charters etc. View the WCRA website at http://www.wcra.org/ While it is not displayed in the Panorama Roundhouse in this 360 degree video, it’s almost safe to assume that it will be, because the it is now a showpiece. At the time the panoramic view was taken, restoration might have not have yet been completed “Alberta .http://www.double-shutter.com/roundhouse/roundhouse 2-360.htm |

![]() | One of the cars in the CPR “VIEW” series, at United Railway Supply, situated in north-end Montreal, August 1970. The company, a used locomotive remanufacturer and reseller, no longer exists. It was located on the Cartierville (electrified) spur, off the Montréal-Deux-Montagnes (electrified) commuter line. A bit of the spur line track can be seen in the bottom right c orner of the other picture. CPR purchased 4 of the cars from the New York Central (their Brook series until 1957, before being retired) Built in 1949 by the Budd Co. for the New York Central Railroad as a 5 double bedroom, buffet, observation lounge, the cars were operated by the Pullman Company between Boston and Chicago. Renamed respectively by the CPR in the “View” series (their NYC name in brackets) they were respectively Sea View (Babbling Brook); East View (Fall Brook); River View (Plum Brook) and Mountain View (Singing Brook). CPR used 2 of the cars on Pool trains (a combined CN-CP passenger operation to maximize reduced passenger loads for each railway), between Montreal and Toronto and the other 2 cars in Pool Trains between Ottawa and Toronto until CN and CP decided to operate passenger service independently on their own tracks, later on. |

![]() | Following the end of Pool Car service on Montreal-Toronto and Ottawa-Toronto in 1969, CPR sold all 4 cars. Sea View and River View went to the Quebec Cartier Mining Company in Northern Quebec where they were used as business cars by company executives. Sea View lost its name and became renumbered Cartier #847 and River View became Cartier #846. In 1986, Cartier Mining sold their #847 into the US, where it was refitted to Amtrak standards and regained its original name of Babbling Brook. A couple of re-sales later, the passenger ca r is still active and occasionally used on the mainline by the new owners. http://www.webbrail.com/history Cartier #846 was also sold into the US and regained its name of Plum Brook. Another CPR car of the same style, the Mountain View (ex-NYC Singing Brook) ended up on the Algoma Central as their Canyon View (#551). See it in their Steelton yard. http://www.cnrphotos.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=74488. It was sold in 1984 into private US ownership and the name Canyon View given to an ACR caboose that was transformed into a fully equipped camp car. http://www.agawacanyontourtrain.com/content/tours/canyonview/ |

![]() | Railway Post Office Car 401807 at the Calgary Industria Yard (opposite Fort Calgary) on 9 Dec 2012; awaiting transport to its new home at the Galt Historic Railway Park, in Stirling, Alberta. http://galtrailway.com/home/ Built in 1914 by the CPR Angus Shops in Montreal as CPR Railway Post Office Car #3774, is was in service until 1959, before being converted to Work Service #404901 and later renumbered to Work Service # 401807. RPO cars were always coupled to passenger trains. Inside the car, postal employees sorted “First Class Mail” by hand while the train was in motion between large cities, resulting in “Same Day” or overnight service. From about 1950, most mail ceased to be carried by rail between cities and went either by air cargo or road. RPO cars lost then their purpose and most were sold, scrapped or put to some other use by the railways such as this one. ![]() | Sometime in the 1920s, open platform cars lost favour with the travelling public because they didn’t provide protection from rain and snow. The Pullman Car Company’s answer was to build an enclosed solarium car which could be air conditioned in the summer (with ceiling fans) and heated in the winter. The car features a few bedrooms and was the height of luxury, much like the PARK dome cars are the tail end of VIA trains today. This one, obviously in action, was possibly photographed somewhere in Northern Ontario where Massey’s late father-in law was stationed for some years with the RCAF. Massey acquired his slide collection. Due to poor camera quality, the number cannot be picked out. ![]() | Car 141, brought out of its indoor storage for Railway Days. It was first built in July 1907, at the CPR Angus Shops in Montreal as a CPR as an obscure passenger coach in the fleet, before being reborn as CPR 141 July 1952, and then converted to Work Car 411585 in 1973, before being donated in 1980 to Calgary’s Heritage Park, who restored it. It’s in very good condition but not normally run around the park except for these two days, late September http://www.heritagepark.ca/special-events/railwayDays.php Car 141 started life as a commuter train in Montreal before used on ski trains to the Laurentians. As you can see, it has reversible rattan seats. Then it became work car DAR411585 The car operated around Kentville for quite a while, before being requisitioned for the CBC series “The National Dream”. Then then fixed it up and it eventually came to Heritage Park in 1980, after touring throughout Canada with some exhibits |

![]() | S&LRy (Sydney & Louisburg Railway) Rod told me the following about this picture. “I recently came into possession of my maternal grandfather’s obituary, Roderick Livingstone. Rod spent most of his career working forDOSCO and spent his last years as Car Shop Foreman/Supervisor in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, where I was born. In the obit, it was mentioned that one of the projects he supervised was the building of a baggage – express car for the Sydney & Louisburg Railway (1928/29 ) and with the help of two books I have, and pictures and input from Jim Simmons, it looks like the car was #9, she looks functional but not pretty! Never the less, it is so great to have a picture and some documentation of a railway project than involved my maternal Grandfather who I never knew – helps to explain that Railroading may indeed be in the genes – I have long known that my paternal grandfather was involved In Railroading since he was the General Foreman, Mechanical Dept. for the Panama Railway when they were constructing the Panama Canal.” |
